It’s been a long time since I decided to try myself in game development. I’ve been learning Unity3D, trying to do several small test projects (2D and 3D). But… I still can’t start some real interesting.
The main problem is that I don’t really like small games (including games for mobile devices), and it’s a bad idea to start project that doesn’t inspire you. But I need product which I can complete “solo”. Of cause I can outsource some parts, but it’s just parts.
There are many ideas in my mind about how to improve some existing game or how to combine one and another to get new very addictive game. But all of this can not be done without some developers team (and in many cases without daily support). So, I do not consider it seriously.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how to find game idea that can comply with my conditions: 1) must be interesting for me, 2) must be possible to be done by me for an acceptable time. In conclusion I found two games which I want to keep in mind:
1) Xenonauts (strategic management part)
2) Plague Inc, Evolved
It’s the most appropriate style of game that I should use. Now the most difficult is gameplay design. Not setting nor story but gameplay. Maybe you have some techniques which help to plan/create good gameplay?

I’ve found useful article on Gamasutra. Not about gameplay but game design – http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/187777/game_design_tools_for_collaboration.php – comparison between the four “formal game design tools”
